Why this route exists

Planning a walking route through San Francisco takes about two hours of internet research: you Google the top attractions, check which ones are actually worth visiting, figure out opening hours, look up walking times between them on Google Maps, copy six addresses in the right order, and then — if you are thorough — read a paragraph about each one so you know what you are looking at.

Or, someone who lives here can do it once and hand you the link. That is what this is.

Every stop on this route has a free 60-second audio sample you can listen to now. If you want the full story — the history, the architecture, the things the plaque does not say — the full guides are waiting.

  1. Stop 1: Ferry Building 🎧 audio guide

Start here. Coffee at Blue Bottle inside the market. The Ferry Building survived both the 1906 and 1989 earthquakes — it is one of the few downtown structures that did. The clock tower is a replica of the Giralda in Seville, Spain. Our audio guide explains why. Suggested time: 30 minutes. Full guide →

  2. Stop 2: Chinatown 🎧 audio guide

Walk up Washington Street ~8 minutes from the Ferry Building. Enter through the Dragon Gate at Grant and Bush. This is the oldest Chinatown in North America — and it was deliberately rebuilt to look more Chinese after the 1906 earthquake, as an architectural strategy to save the neighborhood from being relocated. Fortune cookie factory, dim sum, and alleyway temples. Suggested time: 40 minutes. Full guide →

  3. Stop 3: North Beach 🎧 audio guide

Walk west 5 minutes from Chinatown into San Francisco's Italian neighborhood. This is where the Beat poets drank — Kerouac, Ginsberg, Ferlinghetti — and where you should eat lunch. Caffe Trieste for espresso. Molinari Delicatessen for a sandwich. City Lights Bookstore if you have time to browse. Suggested time: 30 minutes. Full guide →

  4. Stop 4: Coit Tower 🎧 audio guide

Five minutes uphill from North Beach on the Filbert Steps — 400 wooden stairs through a garden neighborhood. Wild parrots. The WPA murals inside the tower are free and genuinely good. The view from the parking lot covers downtown, both bridges, and Alcatraz. Suggested time: 25 minutes. Full guide →

  5. Stop 5: Lombard Street 🎧 audio guide

Walk 15 minutes west from Coit Tower uphill — yes, uphill, this is San Francisco. The zigzag block between Hyde and Leavenworth was built in 1922 because cars could not handle the 27% grade. Go before 9am or after 7pm to avoid the selfie line. Suggested time: 15 minutes. Full guide →

  6. Stop 6: Fisherman's Wharf 🎧 audio guide

Walk 20 minutes downhill to the waterfront. The sea lions at Pier 39 have been here since 1989 — they showed up after the earthquake and never left. Clam chowder in a sourdough bowl. Musée Mécanique if you stayed for the vintage arcade machines. End here for sunset over the Golden Gate. Suggested time: 40 minutes. Full guide →

The route is built. You just walk.

Six stops, three hours, audio guides at every one. Google Maps link in one click. $1.99 — less than a latte at the Ferry Building.
