1. Exploratorium — the hands-down winner
This is not a "look but do not touch" museum. Every exhibit is hands-on. Tornado room. Giant whisper mirror. Pitch-black tactile dome (book in advance). Kids under 4 free. Budget 2-3 hours. 2. de Young Museum — free observation tower
The Hamon Observation Tower on the 9th floor is free — you do not need a museum ticket to go up. 360° view of Golden Gate Park, the Richmond, and the ocean. The museum itself is strong on American art. Free first Tuesday. Our audio guide covers the building's copper skin, which was controversial when it opened.
3. SFMOMA — seven floors of modern
SFMOMA has one of the best photography collections in the country. The living wall in the atrium is a 5-story vertical garden. $25 feels steep if modern art is not your thing — if it is, budget 3 hours. The rooftop sculpture garden has a decent coffee bar.
4. California Academy of Sciences — the everything museum
Rainforest dome with free-flying butterflies. The largest all-digital planetarium dome in the world. A coral reef with 2,000 fish. But also: $40 per adult, and it gets crowded. Go on a weekday morning. The Thursday NightLife (21+) event has a bar and half the crowd.
5. Legion of Honor — the one tourists miss
A Beaux-Arts building copied from the Palais de la Légion d'Honneur in Paris, perched on a cliff with a Golden Gate Bridge view. The Rodin collection is the best on the West Coast. The classical courtyard has a glass pyramid. Same ticket as de Young — $15 gets you both same-day.
6. Asian Art Museum — deep and rotating
One of the largest Asian art collections in the Western world. The building used to be the main library. Rotating exhibits keep it fresh. Free first Sunday. More scholarly than SFMOMA — go if you want depth, skip if you want a quick walk-through.
7. Walt Disney Family Museum (Presidio)
Not what you expect. This is about Walt Disney the person — his early animation experiments, the multiplane camera, the strike that broke his relationship with his animators. Located in the Presidio, so the walk there is half the visit. Great rainy-day activity.
